SAGS sailing

Another good day on the water with 15 boats tackling the off shore course in Moreton Bay.

The BOM prediction of South to SW at 10k was a bit off with Amazing Grace albeit starting late due to crewman and helmsman Chris running late, leading the fleet off in 8 to 11 knots from the ENE. Geoff put his new boat “Blade Runner” into the water but Onno was short of crew so he abandoned his boat at the jetty and jumped on board French Kiss. This turned out a good tactical move on Onno’s part with French kiss managing to hold onto a spinnaker for the run home even though we had a wind shift to the ESE at 20 knots, passing Benny on Oscar for the 3rd spot. Happy Daze being the second starter with master tactician Paul Lincoln on board flying his small blue spinnaker rounded garnet rock first and sprinted for home taking out 1st place and the bottle of rum. This is his second podium in Sag’s but his first win of the year. It was good to see Craig on Rooger back again doing his second Sag’s of the season and sailing single handed. Page 111 also made up a lot of ground and even though they dropped the pole, managed to fly a kite (literally) to hold off a fast finishing French Kiss for 2nd. This is Darryl’s 5th Sag’s podium for the year, so looking good for the annual prize.

A lot of boats got caught out after rounding Reef point when the wind swung to the ESE at 20 knots. This included Trim who had all sorts of problems with his kite and Seraya who flew a big Genaker only to have to drop it in a hurry, not an easy job with 2 on board. War Canoe also decided not to set his Spinnaker on the run home, probably a wise move as Lindsay only had his Wife Sue as crew and Michael on Jenesis was also single handed as was Merv on Rimfire, with his regular crew away. I think Ron on Carisma was also single handed, so well done to these experienced sailors, just don’t try it if you don’t know what you are doing.

Absent boats that I know about were: Jupiter and Midnight Madness apparently at some place on Moreton Island called the gutter bar and Zingara with Peter mumbling something about “go the Tigers”. He should be happy because they beat the Adelaide Crow’s in the AFL grand final.

Competing boats in Sags were: Amazing Grace, Blade Runner, Happy Daze, Rooger, Oscar, Jaguar, Carisma,  Rimfire, French Kiss, Trim, War Canoe, Page111, Jenesis, Seraya, Catalina.

Results: 1st: Happy Daze.  2nd: Page 111. 3rd: French Kiss.  4th: Oscar
