Unfortunately the BOM predicted S to SE at 15 to 20 knots which tends to keep the smaller boats in the Marina. Having said that we still managed 11 boats on the day, so a good turnout considering the forecast. The wind was supposed to drop off in the afternoon, which it did, so the decision was made in the club house to do the usual out the front course. This wasn’t quite what Tony on Sea Sprite was looking for and he got stuck out the front in 22 knots. Fortunately he managed to talk Gary off Jupiter into crewing for him. They headed out looking for the Easterly shift, but it came in too late for them.
Zingara was next away with a new boat called “Nice Try” an Oztac Tramp trimaran following him. A big welcome back to Trevor Anger after an absence of about 20 years. Silverado came next sailing shorthanded then Rimfire, War Canoe and Grecher all making good time down to Garnet rock. Once around the rock, War Canoe with his gun crew off Quest popped a spinnaker and started to overhaul the front runners of Zingara, Silverado and Rimfire. At this stage the wind was starting to drop off and come around more to the ESE. This wasn’t really what the later starters were looking for. Page 111, Jenesis, Seraya and Sentier needed the stronger winds, but it wasn’t to be. Hank on Seraya managed to fly a big Reacher which allowed him to pull away from Jenesis and Page 111, but not enough time to catch up with Grecher in front of him.
Meanwhile War Canoe went around Reef Point in third but with their spinnaker still flying, overhauled Zingara then just caught Rimfire short of the finish line to take out 1st and the prized bottle of Rum. Merv on Rimfire hung on to 2nd with Zingara taking out 3rd. Trevor on Nice Try took out the 4th place, but was establishing handicap anyway, so maybe a good tactical decision in the end.
Competing boats in Sags were: Sea Sprite, Zingara, Nice Try, Silverado, Rimfire, War Canoe, Grecher, Page111, Jenesis, Seraya, Sentier.
Results: 1st: War Canoe. 2nd: Rimfire. 3rd: Zingara. 4th: Nice Try
