WAGS sailing

The bad weather continued with forecasts of 25 knot wind and the 80% probability of rain. Despite fears of a “no race”, 6 boats from the MBBC joined up with 3 boats from the NCYC and enjoyed a great day on and in the water.

The inclement forecast should have been enough to ensure only the bigger boats ventured out for a race. Unfortunately, no one told Trevor Anger and he led the fleet off on his 19.6 ft Haines Hunter Tramp. He disappeared off into the horizon (mist / rain squall) before the second boat started 10 minutes later.

Merv on Rimfire was doing in excess of 12 knots at times while passing Bill on About Time down the first leg.

All 3 boats had a great run down the first leg while Michael (Jenesis), Hank (Seraya) and Tony (Sentier) watched on in vain from the clubhouse as the 3 early starters rounded the D.Bay Red.

Trevor had a great lead going in to the final leg but the strong head wind and large on coming waves finally slowed him down. At the end of the day it was the first 3 boats away that claimed all podium places.

First place went to Merv on Rimfire. This was his first win for the season. He finished the race at 15:09 in 1 hour 26 minutes, which must be some kind of record if they were kept.

Second place went to Bill on About Time, his first WAGS podium finish for the season.

Third place went to Trevor on Nice Try. Trevor no longer argues that size doesn’t matter. His boat is half the length of About Time (19 feet c/w 38 ft). A great effort given the conditions.

Back at the clubhouse the sailors lucky draw winners were Merv (Rimfire) and Benny (Oscar/Sentier).

Many thanks to our generous sponsors David Mason-Cox from Sunshine Boat sales and the MBBC.
