This week’s WAGS 20/02/109 Race Report from PROPHECY
A beautiful sunny day with winds in the 10-15 knot range greeted a fleet of 11 boats and 34 crew. Having one last week the crew aboard Prophecy were concerned to be starting well behind the field.
We could see Seraya, Sentier and Catalina ahead of us on the first reach to Godwin Beach and thought we might just be able to pull them back by then. With our special guest, and secret weapon, Kelly on the helm we set off after the fleet with screecher out and full main. We were last around Godwin beach but Catalina was only just ahead and Sentier looked to be monstering Seraya well within reach. We hoisted our spinnaker and set off towards Caboolture River. With the perfect wind angle for us we passed Catalina, Seraya and Sentier and as we approached the mark there was a gaggle of mono hulls all queuing up to get around. Prophecy can’t quite point as high as the single hulls but she does have speed, and Kelly made the most of it!
Some great lifts on the final tack allowed us to reach the mark first and we celebrated with a 720… almost, well a 360. Actually, there was some confusion on board as to what side of the mark to pass so we thought we’d go both sides just to make sure!!
The handicapper must be feeling pleased as there was a real close tussle for the minor placings with Roger on Jaguar gobbling up second and Zingara claiming third. Divine Madness try as she might had to settle for fourth.
All in all a great afternoon’s sailing and great time back at the club.
Many thanks to our generous sponsor David from Sunshine Boat Sales.
